Tons of Park City alumni are bringing their latest films, but I'm a bit surprised that March-pegged releases of The Weinstein's All Good Things and Focus Features' Greenberg aren't getting a Park City push. Instead, as expected, Sony Pictures Classics will show up and they get to showcase Get Low and A Prophet (Spotlight section) once again, and they'll preem Holofcener's Please Give. Overture will introduce Philip Seymour Hoffman's directing debut (Jack Goes Boating) and Fox Searchlight will preem Duplass Bros.' untitled comedy, which I'm calling Center of Attention - because its a great title considering the subject matter.

This July (2009), we are keeping tabs on Paul Scheuring's Americanized remake of the German film Das Experiment, Trent Cooper's third outing as a director with the comedy Father of Invention, David O. Russell puts Nailed behind to concentrate on The Fighter, Harold Becker starts filming Uma and Abigail in Michigan and David Gordon Green directs his second straight studio film in part of the U.K/Ireland.

With Shrink getting out of the theatrical gates later next month [Roadside Attractions - July 24th] its time for Trigger Street and Kevin Spacey to move into their next 'invention'. A peculiar foursome of players in Craig Robinson, Heather Graham, Johnny Knoxville and Camilla Belle have joined Father of Invention which according to THR begins lensing next week in New Orleans with Trent Cooper helming.

Call this a post-Oscars afterthought, but I think the inaugural 2005 blacklist for un-produced screenplays is working out to be a fairly good predictor/barometer in discriminating the output of quality films and misfires.

Edward Norton (The Illusionist, Fight Club, Death to Smoochy) stars as Walter Fane, an English bacteriologist who moves himself and his adulterous wife Kitty (Naomi Watts -- 21 Grams) to a remote region of 1920’s China racked by a Cholera outbreak in The Painted Veil, directed by John Curran (We Don’t Live Here Anymore). The script is adapted from the novel by W. Somerset Maugham by screenwriter Ron Nyswaner (Philadelphia) and Norton, who have been collaborating for over six years to perfect the script and also get the project off the ground. The finished project is well worth their time – filmed on location in China in cooperation with the China film Bureau, The Painted Veil is part love story, part adventure film, and epic both visually and dramatically.
