Live from Cannes 2011: Our Top 20 Must See Films (An Alternative Guide)

Like anyone else we look forward to the heavyweight selections in the Main Competition this year --- but what about the other sections? Blake Williams and I have our alternative lists ready for you --- a top 20 list of films that have caught our attention for reasons X, Y and Z. Without further ado, here is the list:

Directors’ Fortnight 2011: Téchiné, Kalev, Jayasundara, Sono Headline 25 Announced Features

The final Cannes sidebar of new feature films to unveil its lineup, the Directors' Fortnight (Quinzaine des Réalisateurs), announced 25 features this morning - 21 competing, and 4 special screenings. This year's edition is especially heavy on European films, which take up a whopping 17 of the 21 competing slots. Just like the Critic's Week selection, we've got a majority of debut films and films by little known directors, but also a handful of names that most cinephiles will already be familiar with.

Clip: Innocence Lost in Alicia Duffy’s All Good Children

I'll be seeing a good number of films from this year's Director's Fortnight section. With a line-up comprised of several feature debuts, one of the film's I'm most itching to see is Alicia Duffy's All Good Children, who until I mentioned her here, I hadn't a clue as to who this filmmaker was. I've since become a fan of hers, thanks to her last short film in 2003's The Most Beautiful Man in the World (which was presented in Cannes) and the trailer below (click on screen cap) -- they both present the POV of a child or children under duress.

Kruger and Sagnier Show their ‘Bare Feet’ to Fabienne Berthaud

Internationally renowned regular art-house actresses Diane Kruger (upcoming Inglourious Basterds) and Ludivine Sagnier (A Girl Cut in Two) are being paired together to portray sisters with very different life expectations and experiences in Pieds Nus sur les Limaces (“Bare Feet on Slugs”). Fabienne Berthaud's sophomore feature begins lensing on August 17 until end of September.
