Five filmmakers in Alexander Payne, the Cannes loved Andrea Arnold, actress turned nouveau director Hiam Abbass (upcoming Inheritance, Jerusalem, I Love You) and Raoul Peck...
#10. Of Gods and Men - Xavier Beauvois (February 25th)
Select sequences are almost worthy of comparison to Bresson, including head monk Lambert Wilson's conflicted hike into nature, or the monks' final, close-up filled suppertime farewell. The film needed a more ruthless editor, however -- many scenes come across as mundane and unnecessary. Could easily be an hour shorter, and better for it.
Pathe have Main Comp titles in Paolo Sorrentino's This Must Be the Place and Alain Cavalier's Pater on their product list, but the sale agent might find both titles a difficult sell until they are unveiled to the film critic mass. I'd bet that Phyllida Lloyd's The Iron Lady with Meryl Steep is the most desired item on their inventory list.
Despite an unusually slow weekend for all U.S. indie releases not from Fox Searchlight, imports like Potiche from director Francois Ozon saw great success. The film starring Gerard Depardieu (and a Catherine Deneuve who hit the late night talk show circuit) made a promising $12,143 average in 7 locations. Distributor Music Box Films will likely continue to bank on Depardieu/Deneuve’s star power as it slowly expands into other markets around the country.
