Cannes 2010 Predictions (Sidebars): Bertucelli, Bonello, Muntean, Fliegauf

Screen Daily made up their own Tips list with some surprise titles that I don't think will make it to Cannes (although I badly want to see Abdellatif Kechiche's Black Venus, I think he might return to Venice), and some titles that have a good shot which I did not mention (John Cameron Mitchell's Rabbit Hole) and plenty of their list mimics my picks - such as Julie Bertucelli's The Tree.

Tracking Shot June 2009: Rabbit Hole, We Want Sex, Black Venus…

Cannes 2009 Producer’s Patch: MK2

This year Mk2 bring Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos's Dog tooth and Mathias Gokalp's Nothing Personal in the sidebars and they have Abdellatif Kechiche's next (Black Venus) in production (the director gave us brilliant The Secret of the Grain in 2007/08) and they also have Patrice Chereau's long awaited film – Persecution starring names like Romain Duris and Charlotte Gainsbourg.

Top 20 Films of 2008: #1 The Secret of the Grain

Abdellatif Kechiche’s third film had such on long-lasting affect on me that I came for a second “helping” weeks after….I also rushed to my nearest Arab restaurant for a generous helping of couscous. I place this at my number one slot because it does everything right – plus the filmmaker allows the film to breath with contextual settings of a salty seaside town and the rich array of slice of life characters coating the rather simplistic storyline with honesty and intimacy.

IFC takes critically acclaimed French film with a ‘Grain’ of salt

IFC Films, who has been filling up their coffers with subtitled fair as of late, has acquired the US distribution rights to Abdellatif Kechiche's French drama La Graine et le mulet (The Secret of the Grain).
