2014 Sundance “Trading Cards” Series: #7. Earl Lynn Nelson (Land Ho!)

Published on

Eric Lavallee: Name me three of your favorite “2013 discoveries”…
Earl Lynn Nelson: Favorite Recording Group – The Eagles; Favorite song by Van Morris – Brown Eyed Girl; Televisions Series – Longmire is a pretty good new one, but still love my Law and Order: SVU; Bones, NCIS, CSI, Big Bang Theory, “who done it to comedy”. City: I am always been fond of New Orleans since I lived there for many years; Country: Iceland was an adventure which I enjoyed; Favorite Author: James Joyce; Favorite Book: Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man; Science – Chinese Soft Landing on the Moon; Technology – Electronic.

Lavallee: You worked with a dragon with two heads this time out. As Martha’s muse, could you discuss her working style and how she has evolved as a filmmaker over three features….and seeing that backdrops are such important elements in her films, are you surprised you ended up in Iceland?
Nelson: Martha has the ability to use backdrops to show a “feeling” of a scene. She reacts with the actors to coach them into the emotions that need to be expressed and how she would do it, which makes for a great relationship between director and actor that also goes along with her interaction with the rest of the crew in making her films more enjoyable. No not surprised that I ended up in Iceland but hope next time we can go somewhere where it is warm and has nicer weather. LOL

Lavallee: Could you discuss the character of Mitch. On paper, there appears to be a possible bromance, a possible chip on the shoulder and from what we gather, Land Ho! displays the importance of male companionship in our later years…
Nelson: I do not think the character Mitch has a chip on his should. He is an educated, sensitive, caring person with a big heart, but trying to hide the fact that he is being pushed out “into pasture” in his profession because of his age. He is somewhat ashamed to admit that his job has come to an end and is using the trip to help his friend, as well as himself, to deal with reality.

Favorite Fest?: Have only been to a few, but the one in Columbia SC was pretty cool. Really looking forward to Sundance.
