Marcus Cox: Discovered; Autobiography of a Yogi, by Yogananda and I love it. Discovered a love for Oakland and the East Bay while shooting KICKS. Old Classic; I’ve been jammin’ Buck Owens “My Heart Skips a Beat” pretty hard.
Lavallee: How did you Through Films join Tangerine come to you as a producer and what is it about the screenplay or Sean that made you want to join the project?
M.Cox: We immediately connected with Tangerine because it is such a beautiful story about a community that is so often overlooked. Tangerine gives a voice to people that may not have had one previously. It is such a great privilege to be a part of that.
Lavallee: Variety just named Sean as a 10 Directors to Watch (we’ve been watching him since 2004’s Take Out) and despite being an important fixture in American independent film, this is his first trip to Sundance. What is it about Tangerine that makes it feel like a game-changer moment in Sean’s filmography?
M.Cox: Sean is so talented at giving his audiences a glimpse into another world. The world might be vastly different than the one you or I inhabit, but inevitably he finds such deep humanity and honesty in his characters that we see ourselves in them. Tangerine is special for Sean, and for all of us really, because this film is indicative of the strides our society is making to embrace acceptance and understanding.
