Interview: Rodrigo Moreno – The Delinquents

On the same week Argentines go to the polls to decide the change the course of their country (the much maligned wobbly economy is at the heart of the problems for prosperity), the folks at MUBI kickstart the theatrical release to Rodrigo Moreno‘s The Delinquents (aka Los delincuentes) today. The non-heist heist film and free-flowing dramedy was the most buzzed title from this year’s Cannes Film Festival and was selected to present Argentina for the Best International Film category at the upcoming Oscars. Moreno’s ode to the mouse on a wheel class truly doubles down on escapism but the film’s text is anything but predictable.

I had the pleasure to speak to Rodrigo Moreno (who was fresh off presenting the film at NYFF) and got to discuss how New Argentine Cinema has evolved, how time away from the project due to (mostly) the pandemic might offer a moment to reassess the film in real time and the notion of duality and repetitiveness as a blueprint for this oeuvre.
