Green-er Pastures: Oscilloscope Obsesses over Takal’s “Always Shine”

Published on

Less than a month after premiering at the Tribeca Film Festival, Sophia Takal‘s sophomore film is definitely taking flight. After winning the Best Actress award (Mackenzie Davis) at Tribeca and more recently, Montclair FF Special Jury Prize for Directing, Variety reports reports that Oscilloscope Laboratories has acquired U.S. rights to Always Shine. The film will be released in theaters later this year.

Gist: Mackenzie Davis and Caitlin Fitzgerald play friends and actresses who embark on a weekend getaway to Big Sur. Once alone, their suppressed jealousies and deep-seated resentments bubble to the surface, causing them to lose grasp not just of the true nature of their relationship, but also of their own identities.

Worth Noting: When not in the director’s chair, Takal not only acts, but wears the producer hat for hubby Lawrence Michael Levine’s films including last year’s Wild Canaries (review).

Do We Care?: While her debut film in 2011’s SXSW accepted film (Green) was more miss, than hit, Always Shine has landed plenty of critical praise (and some near perfect scores from the likes of the ThePlaylist) making this five year wait sophomore effort something we’re highly anticipating in the micro indie sphere.
