Love After Love
Hong Kong’s Ann Hui will be ready with her latest feature in 2020, the preliminarily titled Love After Love (which was the title of the 1992 Diane Kurys film as well as the 2017 indie film from Russell Harbaugh). Hui employs a stellar crew on her latest project, lensed by Wong Kar-Wai alum Christopher Doyle, costume designer Emi Wada (of Kurosawa’s Ran and Yimou’s House of Flying Daggers) and art director Zhao Hai (who also worked on Hui’s 2014 title The Golden Era). Eddie Peng (who worked on Yimou’s The Great Wall) and Ma Sichun (recently seen in Lou Ye’s The Shadow Play) headline. Considering her prolific output, Hui has tended to be overlooked by major festivals. She’s competed in Berlin twice, with 1995’s Summer Snow (which won Prize of the Ecumenical Jury) and 1999’s Ordinary Heroes. In San Sebastian she competed with 2001’s Visible Secret, but scored her greatest international success competing in 2011 Venice with A Simple Life, which picked up a handful of awards.
Gist: Hui adapts her third piece by Eileen Chang (following Love in a Fallen City and Eighteen Springs) with her latest, concerns a young woman who move from Shanghai to Hong Kong and falls in with a rich social circle wherein she begins to live beyond her means.
Release Date/Prediction: Hui began principal photography in China in May, 2019. Hui could have her second chance at competing for the Golden Lion in Venice 2020.
