Poland’s Tomasz Wasilewski should be ready with his fourth feature Fools in 2021, a Polish-German-Romanian co-production produced by Ewa Puszczyńska and Ada Solomon. Dorota Kolak and Lukasz Simlat (both who previously worked with Wasileski on his late feature, United States of Love, 2019, while Simlat memorably starred in the recent Corpus Christi, 2019) star in the lead roles, while New Romanian Wave stalwart Oleg Muntu (who lensed Mungiu’s 4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days, 2007 as well as Wasliewski’s last feature) serves as cinematographer. Katarzyna Herman, who starred in the director’s first two features (not to mention a number of notable contemporary Polish production, including Demon, Spoor, and The Lure) is also in the cast. Wasilewski’s 2013 film Floating Skyscrapers, one of a handful of LGBT cinema from Poland, won the East of West award at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival (his 2012 debut In a Bedroom also screened there). In 2016, Wasilewski competed in Berlin with The United States of Love and was awarded Best Screenplay.

Gist: Fools tackles the consequences of incest between a mother and son.

Release Date/Prediction: With production delay due to the pandemic, Wasilewski was prepping the film in May 2020, with filming purportedly taking place sometime in the fourth quarter. Wasilewski could be primed for Cannes, but considering the delay of Berlinale’s next edition (the physical portion) to the summer, he could like compete the second time for the Golden Bear.
