Band of Girls (Bande de Filles)

Director: Celine Sciamma
Writer: Celine Sciamma
Producer: Hold Up Films
U.S. Distributor: Rights Available
Cast: Unknown

Director Celine Sciamma, who received considerable regard for her first two features, Water Lilies (2007) and Tomboy (2011) returns with her latest feature, the final in a trilogy of films dealing with childhood and adolescence. An unknown cast, made up of young women between the ages of 16 and 20, Sciamma’s latest, which will most likely examine sexuality and orientation as frankly as she has with her other features, sounds similar to Breillat’s school of filmmaking. Based on the quality of her first two films, this is a definite must-see title of 2014.

Gist: The story focuses on Marieme, 16, who lives her life as a succession of prohibitions. The censorship exercised by the neighborhood, the law laid down by boys, the dead end of school… But her encounter with a group of girls who have claimed their freedom changes everything. She embraces the codes of the street, violence, friendship, to live her youth.

Release Date: The film should be ready by this spring, so we predict this showing up in Un Certain Regard at Cannes.
