Inside the 2011 Cannes Film Festival: Surprise Un Certain Regard Winners

Published on

The jury comprised of Emir Kusturica and peers caught critics by surprise in selecting a pair of unpopular Croisette items for this year’s Un Certain Regard prize. Beating out the likes of Bruno Dumont’s Hors Satan, Sean Durkin’s Martha Marcy May Marlene, Joachim Trier’s Oslo, August 31st and Gerardo Naranjo’s excellent Miss Bala, were Kim Ki-Duk’s Arirang (who sang his appreciation for the acknowledgment) and Andreas Dresen’s Stopped on Track. The good news is that an UCR Special Jury Prize went to a film that should have played in the Main Comp in, Andrei Zvyagintsev’s Elena. Mohammad Rasoulof who wasn’t able to be present to deliver his thank yous – won the Directing Prize for Be Omid É Didar.
