2017 Sundance Film Festival Predictions: Christopher Radcliff & Lauren Wolkstein’s The Strange Ones

Published on

If Christopher Radcliff & Lauren Wolkstein’s directing debut shores up in Park City it’ll be its second stint. The filmmaking pair introduced The Strange Ones (2011) in its short form, and fast-forward until August of this year and we were pleasantly surprised that the feature version was not only in the works, but that production was completed. In between these two films, Wolkstein’s immaculate short Social Butterfly also preemed at Sundance, while her part in the feature project Collective: Unconscious (Radcliff was an editing partner on that one) landed in comp at SXSW. On his side, Radcliff had his 2014 short Jonathan’s Chest preem at Sundance as well. Filmed out of upstate New York, The Strange Ones saw Cop Car‘s James Freedson-Jackson topline, and he is backed by Owen Campbell, Tobias Campbell, Marin Ireland, and Alex Pettyfer.

Gist: A man and a boy, traveling to an unknown destination, find respite in a motel swimming pool. On the surface all seems normal, but nothing is quite what it seems to be, and what appears to be a simple vacation soon gives way to a more complex and darker truth.

Production Co./Producers: Sébastien Aubert, Shani Geva (Little Accidents), Michael Prall (Love After Love), Relic Pictures’ Eric Schultz (Katie Says Goodbye), Daniela Taplin Lundberg (Under the Silver Lake).

Prediction: NEXT section or SXSW Comp entry.

U.S. Distributor: Rights Available. WME Global (domestic). TBD (international)
