2017 Sundance Film Festival Predictions: Ritesh Batra’s The Sense of an Ending

Published on

He piled on the short films more or less around the time where he was selected for 2009 Sundance Writers and Directors Labs with a script that has yet to come to fruition (which also earned him a Sundance Time Warner Storytelling Fellow and an Annenburg Fellow). It’s his directorial debut in the Cannes preemed The Lunchbox (it was also showcased at Sundance ’14) which rocket launched his career and while we wait The Sense of an Ending to premiere, this workaholic didn’t spend much time unpacking his suitcase as he was taped for Our Souls at Night — which is currently filming and includes the participation of the Sundance kid himself, Robert Redford. It’s entirely feasible that The Sense of an Ending adaption starring Michelle Dockery, Joe Alwyn, Harriet Walter, Emily Mortimer, Jim Broadbent and Charlotte Rampling will spill into Park City. CBS Films could use positive push before a release and perhaps a Berlin showing as well.

Gist: Based on a screenplay from playwright Nick Payne, and adapted from Julian Barnes’ Man Booker Prize-winning bestseller of the same name, this is about a man becomes haunted by his past and is presented with a mysterious legacy that causes him to re-think his current situation in life.

Production Co./Producers: Origin Pictures’ Ed Rubin, David M. Thompson (Woman in Gold).

Prediction: Premiere section. Berlin competition title a possibility.

U.S. Distributor: CBS Films
