2018 Sundance Film Festival Predictions: Janus Metz & Sine Plambech’s Between Two Worlds

Published on

It certainly appears that we might one day be relating Janus Metz‘s film output in the similar realm as Jonathan Demme, Michael Winterbottom, Asif Kapadia, Werner Herzog and/or Kevin MacDonald. Metz has peppered his filmography with several items (fiction and non-fic form) since he blasted onto the scene with the snappy, in harms way Croisette preemed 2010’s Armadillo. He resurfaced proper just this past September with his sophomore film, Borg vs McEnroe (TIFF opener) and is currently set to direct Dangerous Ground – about war veteran Johnnie Porche, but its his technically his first conceived docu dating a decade in all alongside anthropologist Sine Plambech that should fall onto the 2018 calendar. Between Two Worlds is based on four individual films worth of footage – it should make for an ethnocentric effort which was shot over a 10-year time span and features three generations. The project was part of the CPH:DOX’s Work-in-Progress session.

Gist: This is a unique longitudinal study of a network of Thai/Danish marriages shot over ten years. It is an exploration of globalization over time set on the intimate stage of marriage and family. The film follows four couples and their children and documents how their lives develop as a consequence of the economic and emotional bonds that tie them together. It is an ensemble piece and an epic family drama set in two outskirt communities at either side of the global divide – yet intimately connected through marriage migration.

Production Co./Producers: Magic Hour Films’ Lise Lense-Moller (Burma VJ: Reporting from a Closed Country)

Prediction: World Cinema Documentary Competition.

U.S. Distributor: Rights Available. TBD (domestic). TBD (international)
