2013 Cannes Critics’ Panel Day 11: Jarmusch’s Only Lovers Left Alive

Those who’ll have stayed until the end of the fest (most in the industry skip town a good 48 hours prior to Sunday) will have reaped the rewards of what a good number critics will consider a great double Main Comp offering send-off. Day 11 in the 2013 edition of the Cannes Film Festival saw Roman Polanski charm with Venus in Fur, and last night Jim Jarmusch’s Only Lovers Left Alive (which got an earlier screening last night and a subsequent Sony Pictures Classics pick-up) was a surprise buzz film – one that was added by the fest about a week after the official announcement. On paper the vampire movie sounded as promising as The Limits of Control, but the Detroit and Tangiers set project with Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston toplining seduced critics with its soundtrack, moody set of characters and Jarmusch’s comedic inserts and nocturnal visual treatment.
