2019 Cannes Critics’ Panel: Day 5 – Diao Yinan’s The Wild Goose Lake

Diao Yinan's The Wild Goose Lake

A genre item that Chinese censors didn’t take issue with, Diao Yinan who won big time in Berlin with his last picture Black Coal, Thin Ice makes a trip back to Cannes after having presented Night Train in the Un Certain Regard section in the excellent Cannes year that was 2007. Pitched as a story of a gangster on the run who eventually sacrifices himself to save his family and the woman he encounters along the way, The Wild Goose Lake (his fourth feature film) stars several of the same players from his previous Silver Bear winner. Memento Intl. are selling.

With the first screenings taking place earlier today, we are still awaiting for more grades — but so far the Chinese noir item appears to have pleased our early onlookers (Quentin Tarantino was among the onlookers). We’ll have more grades later today plus a wave of scores for Corneliu Porumboiu’s comedy, The Whistlers.
