Published on

Selected as a competition offering in the Venice Film Festival’s Orizzonti section, Nehir Tuna‘s lands a prestige spot to showcase his directorial debut film – a project we’ve been following since it was selected for the Sundance Institute 2019 January Screenwriters Lab Fellows. Tomorrow is the big premiere day on the Lido for Dormitory (aka Yurt) and we’ve got your poster one sheet first look exclusive. Featuring actor Doğa Karakaş in the role of Ahmet, the filmmaker dug into his own personal story to detail a portrait of isolation, some coming-of-age elements in a politically tense background. It’s also a film that may offer hope via a key friendship. Produced by TN Yapim’s Tanay Abbasoğlu, Red Balloon Film’s Dorothe Beinemeier and Cine-Sud Promotion’s Thierry Lenouvel this is a three-nation co-production between Turkey, Germany and France and is in the running for the Lion of the Future (Luigi De Laurentiis) award. Here is your first look:

1997, the tensions between religious and secular Turks are increasing. Fourteen-year-old Ahmet is sent by his recently converted father to an Islamic dormitory, a “Yurt”, to learn Muslim values. Ahmet works hard to be the perfect son, but he has trouble fitting in with rough kids at the Yurt, and feels isolated in his day secular school, where he hides his new home from his classmates. His only solace is a new friend Hakan, a street-smart kid who knows how to work the Yurt system. Together they dream of making their own decisions.
