Netflix Mexico: New Films by Maite Alberdi, Alonso Ruizpalacios & Gabriel Ripstein in the Works

Netflix is banking on auteur filmmakers for a slew Mexico-based and financed projects. Among the notable filmmakers we find Chilean filmmaker (The Mole Agent and The Eternal Memory) Maite Alberdi who is setting up her next docu with the working title Un hijo propio. This is about the deep longing to become a mother and the constant pressure from those around her drive Alejandra to fake a pregnancy. What begins as a simple lie quickly spirals into a complex charade that she must sustain for months in front of her hopeful husband and family. Trapped in a consuming deception, Alejandra is pushed to cross an irreversible line, unleashing a media scandal that will shake the entire country.

Alonso Ruizpalacios previously had the support of Netflix for his docu A Cop Movie – and he;’ll re-team with them for Aura. An adaptation of the novel by Mexican writer Carlos Fuentes, published in 1962. Aura tells the story of Felipe Montero, a young historian who applies for a job with Doña Consuelo, General Llorente’s widow, to organize and finish writing her late husband’s memoirs. In exchange, Felipe must live in the house, a mysterious place that remains in darkness to avoid memories of the general. There, he soon meets Aura, Doña Consuelo’s niece, in an unsettling atmosphere reminiscent of an eerie garden. In a state of intoxication, Felipe will discover that Aura’s dependence on the old woman goes beyond the imaginable.

Not to be confused with Cesar Diaz’s Mexico 86, Diego Luna joins helmer Gabriel Ripstein for México 86 – a satire and gallows humor, México 86 chronicles Mexico’s improbable bid to host the 1986 World Cup—an audacious, against-all-odds feat made possible only by pure Mexican ingenuity. Here is the projects that Netflix will get behind.
