Day 4: Live from Cannes: Jim Jarmusch and the Golden Carosse

Having a big ass camera means that the many “check points” before going into screenings (in the main comp and Un Certain Regard films) provides me with very little results – I’m forced to drop it off in a coat check. Thankfully, the films that play out at the Director’s Fortnight afford me a different outcome. So before they presented the screening for Tony Manero, the pre-planned award of the The Golden Coach (Le Carosse d’Or) was to be given out to Jim Jarmusch. Filmmaker Cedric Kahn made the introductions with a speech claiming that they are giving him the award because the 100 plus filmmakers who select the winner each year are in fact jealous of the given person’s talents and with Jarmusch there is plenty to be jealous about. The filmmaker behind Stranger Than
Paradise
, Down by Law and Broken Flowers gave a nice speech which made reference to the events of 1968 and which quoted the likes of Oscar Wilde, Aki Kaurismäki and finally words of wisdom from Tilda Swinton. Here are a couple of pictures that I took.
