9. Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio
We can bet that Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio won't be renewing their vows every two years as they did with the stretch that sprouted Gangs of New York (2002), The Aviator (2004), The Departed (2006) and I figure the years in between projects will only increase. Technically meant to be released in 2009. Shutter Island turned out to be the divertissement pic that made the month of February a little less tedious and overall, it could be defined as an exercise in style and genre filmmaking closer to Scorsese being experimental with Bringing Out the Dead than a problem film such as Kundun. Dressed in 50's garb, the federal marshal role allowed DiCaprio to flex some of the paranoia muscles he used in Aviator, in many ways DiCaprio is delving into film history's battered and tragic heroes that we'd see in Welles and Hitch's films. DiCaprio looked the part and made "madness" chic. With so many A list directors wanting to borrow Scorsese's protege, I think the Scorsese-Dicaprio filmography will be stuck at four films until the "perfect project" is on the table.
