Among the directorial debuts loading up this year’s Discovery programme at this year’s Toronto Intl. Film Festival we find the boldly titled Head to Head by Iranian filmmaker Ghasideh Golmakani. Born in Tehran, Golmakani’s work to date has looked at how ordinary women navigate systems that quietly — and sometimes violently — remind them of their subordinate position. She has used dark comedy, absurdity and the mundane to illustrate something considerably heavier beneath the surface …. and so after a cluster of recent shorts Online Shopping (’17), Limbo (’17), Horn (’18), and Spring in Autumn (’21), we now look at contemporary Iran, where a female filmmaker forces her male actors to wear skirts and headscarves for her new film, provoking on-set rebellion as their discomfort and wounded pride collide with her radical vision.
