Slowly making her way through Mike Leigh’s filmography with small roles in Happy-Go-Lucky (2008), Mr. Turner (2014) and Peterloo (2018), actress Kate O’Flynn comes full circle with Tender Loving Care, in which she plays Amy, a supportive chum and child protection worker whose own romantic life is less fortunate. The drama premiered at Telluride and Toronto, where we caught the film, and then O’Flynn went on to win the Silver Shell for Best Leading Performance at the San Sebastián International Film Festival. Having just won an Emmy for her role in Widow’s Bay, the actress is enjoying a remarkable career year. At a London press junket roundtable, I had the chance to ask her about the construction of Amy’s character and the small, telling details that bring her to life. Bleecker Street releases the toasty Tender Loving Care on December 4th.
