Gabor Reisz’s ‘Ember végez’ – Everything We Know So Far…

Gabor Reisz's Ember végez

In his three film filmography, Hungarian filmmaker Gábor Reisz has offered a social commentary mostly irony over deadpan, to explore folks who are often adrift in a confusing world, where social tensions mount and auds are offered insight thru different perspectives. 2014’s For Some Inexplicable Reason (Karlovy Vary International Film Festival selection) was followed by 2018’s Bad Poems and his 2023 breakout Explanation for Everything – the top prize winner from the Orizzonti section at the Venice Film Festival. His highly anticipated fourth feature just wrapped up this year. Here is everything we know so far for … Gabor Reisz’s Ember végez.

The project was flying a bit under the radar, we imagine financing came together last year for what was a Budapest shoot in March of this year. Reisz re-teamed with Éva Schulze for writing duties.

This follows Kristóf, a man who discovers black mould covering his apartment wall and begins questioning neighbors about leaky pipes, triggering events that turn his world upside down. As per Screen Daily, the logline is “what will break down faster?”

Adam Tompa, Bettina Jozsa, Rodrigo Crespo and Gyorgy Gaszo lead the cast, with the surprise addition of Italian actor Marcello Fonte from Matteo Garrone’s Dogman (2018) fame.

Proton Cinema’s producer Júlia Berkes is once again onboard as is All At Once’s Andrea Romeo.

With production having been completed in April, it’ll be a race to the finish line and almost impossible task to have Ember végez ready in time for Venice where it could compete for a competition slot or second showcase in the Orizzonti section. Berlinale in 2027 might be the most logical outcome. Films Boutique are handling international sales.
