Interview: David Lowery (A Ghost Story)

Published on

Just prior to immersing himself into editing dock mode with the feature he shot earlier this summer (Old Man and the Gun – with Elisabeth Moss, Casey Affleck, Robert Redford), David Lowery was on the last legs of his film fest and press tour for the A24 release of A Ghost Story. Arguably the hottest ticket at Sundance back in January, and at Karel Och’s Karlovy Vary and Mitch Davis’ Fantasia Intl. Film Festival, I got the chance to sit down with the filmmaker for a generously lengthy one on one.

A film that has something new to offer upon a second viewing, the acclaim will certainly resurface during awards season. This interview took place exactly one week after A Ghost Story was released in a handful of theatres in NYC. We talked about branding and the A24 folks methodology, working with Casey Affleck, how to keep your film production a secret, how to work direct a physical performance, bed sheets, passing on culture, the soundtrack of our lives, working with Shane Carruth and finally, what he thought of Assayas’ Personal Shopper.
