Punk Not Dead: Gina Rodriguez To Topline Carlos López-Estrada “Kill Yr Idols”

Published on

Currently mounting Didi as a producer, if lady luck is on his Blindspotting filmmaker Carlos López-Estrada‘s side, he will direct his next feature film in the fall with Gina Rodriguez toplining what is essentially a two-person female coming-of-ager film. After landing Kill Yr Idols at the 2023 January Screenwriters Lab (with some recent Rooftop coin), this becomes one of the first productions out of a new shingle Antigravity Academy – with Kelly Marie Tran. Beasts of the Southern Wild‘s Michael Gottwald (who also has the upcoming Venice entry Gasoline Rainbow and O’Dessa on slate) will also produce. Production takes place in the South of Texas.

Written by Bernardo Cubria, John Hibey and Josh Soskin, inspired by the real life stories of bands living in the border town of Rio Grande Valley in S. Texas. A punk rock coming-of-age film about two Latinx best friends trying to play their first show as a band, a quest that is complicated by the fact that one of them is undocumented and the other has crippling stage fright. They have less than 48 hours to create a fan base and figure out what their sound is. In the process, they go about discovering their own culture and metaphorically “killing” their whitewashed brit punk idols.
