Monday

One of a handful of notable directors stepping out from the shadows of the Greek Weird Wave is Argyris Papadimitropoulos, who will present his most high-profile offering to date with fourth feature, Monday. Produced by Christos V. Konstantakopoulous (Before Midnight, 2013), Damian Jones (The Iron Lady, 2011) and Brian Kavanaugh-Jones (Loving, 2016), the English language feature stars Sebastian Stan and Denise Gough. Papadimitropoulos’ sophomore film Wasted Youth (2011) premiered in Rotterdam as did his third feature, the breakout Suntan (2016), which also played SXSW. Production took place back in August and wrapped last month.

Gist: Written by Papadimitropoulos and Rob Hayes, this follows the story of Mickey (Stan) and Chloe (Gough), two Americans in their mid-thirties living in Athens, who meet in the heat of summer one whirlwind weekend. When Chloe’s time in Greece is drawing to a close, she decides to give up her high-flying job back home and explore whether one weekend’s passion can stand the reality of the inevitable Monday.

Release Date/Prediction: Monday could potentially follow in the footsteps of Suntan and return to SXSW. The presence of Sebastian Stan could also help secure festival play in anywhere from Un Certain Regard or Directors’ Fortnight to a fall premiere in TIFF’s Platform.
