Se Escuchan Aullidos

One of Mexico’s busiest directors over the past decade has been the multi-award winning Julio Hernández Cordón, who will likely have three new titles premiering across 2020 and 2021. First up will likely be the drama Se Escuchan Aullidos (Howls Are Heard), produced by star Francisco Barreiro (featured in Adrian Garcia Bogliano’s Here Comes the Devil, 2012), Daniela Leyva Becerra Acosta and Andrea Toca. Joining Barreiro in the cast are Cordon, Alejandra Estrada, Graciela Gonzalez and Fabiana Hernandez. Cordon has competed twice in Locarno, with 2012’s Polvo and 2015’s I Promise You Anarchy. His 2018 title Buy Me a Gun premiered in Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes. Francisco Barreiro has also been to announced to star in Cordon’s next feature, The Day is Long and Dark (My Friends are Vampires), scheduled to shoot at the end of 2020. Cordon’s punk western Ojalá el sol me esconda (I Hope the Sun Hides Me) is also yet to be released.

Gist: Cordon’s latest drama is about a young girl who goes on a journey to find the lake of Texcoco (a lake basin now occupied by Mexico City).

Release Date/Prediction: Cordon was in post-production on the title in Fall of 2019. We anticipate his latest should pop up on a major platform in the fall festival circuit, which could mean a return to Locarno or perhaps a slot in TIFF’s Platform program.
