Top 100 Most Anticipated Films of 2013: #44. Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity

Date:

Gravity

Director: Alfonso Cuarón
Writer(s): Alfonso and Jonás Cuarón, Rodrigo García
Producer(s): David Heyman, Geyer Kosinski
U.S. Distributor: Universal Pictures
Cast: Sandra Bullock, George Clooney

There ain’t too many Sandra Bullock pics I’ve looked forward to in this lifetime of movie watching, but if Children of Men proved anything it’s that Alfonso Cuarón can work with a big scale and sprawling concepts – his 7th feature could measure up to easily be another dis-comfortable, thinking man’s studio film. Confirmed: co-star Clooney sports the space suit well (see Solaris – pic above).

Gist: Bullock plays Dr. Ryan Stone, a brilliant medical engineer on her first shuttle mission, with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky (Clooney) in command of his last flight before retiring. But on a seemingly routine spacewalk, disaster strikes. The shuttle is destroyed, leaving Stone and Kowalsky completely alone—tethered to nothing but each other and spiraling out into the blackness. The deafening silence tells them they have lost any link to Earth…and any chance for rescue. As fear turns to panic, every gulp of air eats away at what little oxygen is left. But the only way home may be to go further out into the terrifying expanse of space.

Release Date: Universal pushed back the film a year to secure an October 18th wide release. This could have a showing at TIFF or the NYFF.
