Austria were in a bit of a pickle situation with three potential frontrunners for the 2027 Oscar race. They had Cannes competition item Gentle Monster (backed by Netflix), Un Certain Regard winner Everytime (1-2 Special) and then we have Berlinale winner for Best Actress in Rose all vying as hopefuls for Best Intl. Feature Film Category. The choice was cemented today — finally it is Markus Schleinzer‘s third feature film that was selected. With future stops at Telluride and New York Film Fest (oddly TIFF wasn’t interested), the stellar b&w drama will now see Mubi pushing harder for two Sandra Hüller perfs – they also have Fatherland in the mix.
In Nicholas Bell’s ★★★★ review he mentions that “the narration confirms the necessity and the inherent power of such a historical recuperation. It recalls the oft used phrase “Well-behaved women seldom make history.” But those who do, despite the men desperate to erase a record of their lives, are the evidence of the possibility to create one’s self, and reject the status quo projected upon us all.” AMPAS will announce the 15 films on the Best International Feature Film shortlist on Dec. 15. The five nominees will be announced Jan. 21, 2027. The 99th Academy Awards ceremony will take place on March 14, 2027.
