2022 Cannes Critics’ Panel: Day 11 – Kelly Reichardt’s Showing Up

Published on

Feted on the Croisette this year – receiving the Carrosse d’Or award from the Directors’ Fortnight, Kelly Reichardt had to wait until the last day of competition to showcase her understated Showing Up – her fourth film collab with Michelle Williams. Reichardt has been to Cannes only one time before – when she premiered Wendy and Lucy in the Un Certain Regard section.

An artist wants to take a day off to finalize her sculptures for her upcoming show…and life gets in the way. A series of distractions and a nagging hot water issue for apartment’s shower annoy the hell out of Lizzie.

Considering that most films are falling just under the 3 mark, it’s rather impressive that this unassuming yet deft comedy (?) is among the favorites. Sixteen of our jury folks gave this a solid 3 average.
