TIFF 2010: Max Winkler’s Ceremony

Date:

One part Rushmore‘s Max Fischer, one part Catcher in the Rye‘s Holden Caulfield and fused with film and music references that remind of certain films from the 70’s, Ceremony, Max Winkler’s coming-of-age film in grown mens’ clothing isn’t a stroke of genius, but it announces the arrival of a new filmmaker worth keeping an eye out for. At times I felt “I’ve seen this before”, while at other junctures of the film, my thinking was, this is patterned from a unique fabric. Even if topliners Michael Angarano and Uma Thurman don’t command strong box office indie numbers, there is a genuine likability factor that the top 6 distributors would be dumb to pass up.
