Brighton Beach memoirs for Perelman

Date:

I’ve been looking forward to seeing what Vadim Perelman has in store for us ever since I caught House of Sand and Fog back in 2003. With his sophomore feature now complete (In Bloom starring Uma Thurman and Evan Rachel Wood) and awaiting probably a world premiere at the Toronto film festival, the Ukrainian-born director is looking to fill up his future slate.

While at Cannes I read that Perelman was looking to remake the Paprika Steen film Aftermath, but Variety reports that Beacon Pictures will finance a remake of the 2001 Korean film “Failan” and has paired Perelman to direct with the screenplay to be written by writer Jose Rivera from The Motorcycle Diaries fame. Shooting will begin in the fall. Beacon's Armyan Bernstein will produce with Landscape Pictures chief Bob Cooper. Pic will be exec produced by Vertigo's Roy Lee and Doug Davison, along with Beacon's Suzann Ellis and Charlie Lyons. Landscape's Orin Woinsky also will be involved in a producing capacity.

Failan is the story has a young refugee arriving from Russia and winding up in the clutches of Russian mobsters in Brighton Beach. The thugs arrange a marriage with one of their own. When she dies, the husband who'd never met her discovers letters she'd written him that show both her gratitude to him and how badly she was exploited. His remorse compels him to destroy her tormentors.
