Broken Embraces is like comfort food or your favorite meal at a restaurant: you pretty much know what you’re getting and it is just as good whether its the 8th, 10th, 12th time around. This is how I feel about Almodóvar’s love triangle tragi-comedy and overly dramatic (for all intentional purposes) Abrazos Rotos. A love poem to filmmaking and film history, I love how Pedro takes the noir film (which he was perfectly at ease with in Bad Education) and punctuates it with vivid colors, Spanish accents and the sort of melodrama we’ve already been witness to in his previous work but don’t mind revisiting once again. Surprisingly, in what would be considered as a week competition year at Cannes, I think this could walk away with one of the top prizes. Here are some pics I managed to get in the jungle of photogs as they were coming down to the press conference for the film. Cruz offers another superb perf, but the actor who receives the most screen time is Lluis Homar. Coming soon: My full review.
