A half-dozen filmmakers will be setting up shop at The Résidence de la Cinéfondation…and of the six, we have South African filmmaker Oliver Hermanus who showed up at TIFF with Shirley Adams and Ioana Uricaru, one of the filmmakers who participated on Cristian Mungiu’s Tales From the Golden Age.

Mungiu and Ioana Uricaru most recently wrote the script for Outskirts for helmer Bogdan Apetri and Hermanus might want to consider a title change for his project (Two Lovers), since it was recently used by James Gray. Of all the film scripts that were workshopped at the Residence, almost 90 percent were eventually lensed. From October 1st 2009 to February 15th 2010, the Résidence plays host to 6 new winners to accompany them in the writing of their first or second feature, and facilitate the preparation of their film. Here are the 6 selected projects.

After the Wedding – Ioana Uricaru (Romanian, 1st feature) the story of a young Romanian woman, Mara, who marries an American and settles into a home in Virginia with her 6 year old son.

Clovis Teazle – Andrew Legge (Irish, 1st feature, silent) this is about the journey of Clovis, a young female doctor, through the slums of Paris in 1916: a town that is dying after 1000 years of industrialization and ruled by an incompetent dictator.

For Vain – Zhang Yue (Chinese, 1st feature) this is about Guo (20) leaving prison and his confrontation with the father of his uncle, who has been paralysed for many years and who he is in charge of looking after.

Todos Nosotros – Paz Fabrega (Costa Rican, 2nd feature) this looks at the behaviour of the middle class when faced with social inequality.

Two Lovers – Oliver Hermanus (South African, 2nd feature) this looks at the current-day relationship between Amina (20), from a devout Muslim family, and Raf (41), an Afrikaner whose baby she is expecting.

Ziba – Bani Khosnoudi (Iranian, 1st feature) this describes how one easily retreats into a social environment that one could in fact escape from.
