The Gist: Based on the off-Broadway play written by Bob Glaudini and produced by Hoffman’s LAByrinth Theater Company, “Boating” centers on the titular character, a stoner limo driver who embarks on such quixotic missions as cooking and swimming lessons, and his unlikely relationship with another lovable loser.….(more)
Cast: Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Ryan and John Ortiz (he also played in the play).
Why is it on the list?: He probably found confidence in seeing another broadway play in Doubt making a pretty good transition to the big screen, and there is a distinct feeling we are going meta here with the role found in Synecdoche, New York. I don’t think we need to mention the filmmakers he’s worked with, but one thing is assured: Hoffman gives it his all as an actor and is among the top 5 working actors of the 90’s and 00’s — so I expect the same commitment behind the camera.
Release Date/Status?: Opening at Sundance, Overture have yet to attach a date, but I imagine they’ll play it by ear, listen to the critics and make their marketing decisions from then on.
