#84. Jack Goes Boating

Director: Philip Seymour Hoffman
Writer(s): Bob Glaudini
Producers: Beth O’Neil, Peter Saraf, Marc Turtletaub and Emily Ziff
Distributor: Overture Films

The Gist: Based on the off-Broadway play written by Bob Glaudini and produced by Hoffman’s LAByrinth Theater Company, “Boating” centers on the titular character, a stoner limo driver who embarks on such quixotic missions as cooking and swimming lessons, and his unlikely relationship with another lovable loser.….(more)

Cast: Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Ryan and John Ortiz (he also played in the play).

Why is it on the list?He probably found confidence in seeing another broadway play in Doubt making a pretty good transition to the big screen, and there is a distinct feeling we are going meta here with the role found in Synecdoche, New York. I don’t think we need to mention the filmmakers he’s worked with, but one thing is assured: Hoffman gives it his all as an actor and is among the top 5 working actors of the 90’s and 00’s — so I expect the same commitment behind the camera.

Release Date/Status?: Opening at Sundance, Overture have yet to attach a date, but I imagine they’ll play it by ear, listen to the critics and make their marketing decisions from then on.
