Now in its third year, Sundance's NEXT section (which describes its works as "bold", and "innovative" (think more accessible than and just as low budget as the stuff we find in the New Frontiers section) grabs our attention because of its inclusion of Craig Zobel's latest effort, Compliance a true story drama perhaps in the same budget range as Great World of Sound.

A 2010 Sundance Screenwriters Lab selected project with additional support from the Annenberg Film Fellowship Grant and the Indian Paintbrush Fellowship, Ry Russo Young teamed with Lena Dunham for a project that attracted the likes of Dylan McDermott, Rosemarie DeWitt, John Krasinski and Olivia Thirlby for a film budgeted at a significantly larger amount than what it cost to make her debut film, You Wont Miss Me (a New Frontier programmed film). Nobody Walks looks poised for a U.S Dramatic Comp inclusion.

Odds that a Sundance short films program will be a good harvest are in the high percentile -- with over 6000 short film submissions sent in and about less than 100 selected certainly increases those odds. In any given year at the festival, you could easily trace back a filmmaker's presenting his/her feature film to the roots of shorts included in the fest from previous years.

Most cinephiles are perhaps more familiar with Smith's feature debut - the low budget (8 million dollar range) The Ruins for Spielberg's Dreamworks. Not much has happened since 2008, Smith has stuck to his roots, made this 25/25 item for Elle magazine, but apparently had the time to sneak in a short film this summer which will be showcased at the upcoming Sundance Film Fest.

I've mentioned Magic Valley as a possible fall release, but it looks like producer Heather Rae plans to make the trek back to Park City, the lieu where Frozen River took off. Expect Jaffe Zinn's feature debut to grab a spot in the U.S Dramatic Comp and maybe head to Berlin the month after.
