I spent all of last week divulging some of films that I expect to be in Cannes this year, and Screen Daily happened to do the same. There are a good number of films that are mentioned of both sites' lists, but I mention about twenty films that the trade makes no mention of, and of course they have got a long list as well of films that I either passed on as potential selections or I was totally oblivious as to their existence.

Most recently invited to the NYFF 08's with his short Gauge, Griffin appears to be part of a collective of filmmakers worth keeping a very close eye on. There's an inkling of Days of Heaven, Ballast and Shotgun Stories (guns/open fields) and that's enough to get me interested.

With the final Gala and Special Presentation announcements for TIFF out of the way, and unless Telluride, BFI London and Rome reveal some major world premiere coups, we can expect to see new works from Alejandro González Iñárritu, Taylor Hackford, Géla Babluani, Radu Mihaileanu, Mark Ruffalo, Olivier Dahan, Julie Taymor, Sylvain Chomet only in 2010.

Malick has been toying with the project for as almost as long as I have been alive. Despite the annoying wait for everyone of his works, I'm a huge admirer and appreciate the team he has put together with quality contributors in the form of original music by Alexandre Desplat, lensing by Emmanuel Lubezki and Art Direction by There Will Be Blood's Jack Fisk.

A sub-par edition of Cannes might signify a better than average year for the heads of the Venice and the Toronto Int. Film Festival. I'm sure Venice's Marco Müller and TIFF's Piers Handling and Cameron Bailey are already making some tough decisions as we speak. Since I'm already looking forward to the Fall movie going season and festival editions, I thought I would speculate on some of the titles that should be unveiled at these stalwart festivals.
