Top 100 Most Anticipated Films of 2010: Philip Seymour Hoffman's Jack Goes Boating

#84. Jack Goes Boating

Director: Philip Seymour Hoffman
Writer(s): Bob Glaudini
Producers: Beth O'Neil, Peter Saraf, Marc Turtletaub and Emily Ziff
Distributor: Overture Films

The Gist: Based on the off-Broadway play written by Bob Glaudini and produced by Hoffman's LAByrinth Theater Company, "Boating" centers on the titular character, a stoner limo driver who embarks on such quixotic missions as cooking and swimming lessons, and his unlikely relationship with another lovable loser.....(more)

Cast: Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Ryan and John Ortiz (he also played in the play).

Why is it on the list?He probably found confidence in seeing another broadway play in Doubt making a pretty good transition to the big screen, and there is a distinct feeling we are going meta here with the role found in Synecdoche, New York. I don't think we need to mention the filmmakers he's worked with, but one thing is assured: Hoffman gives it his all as an actor and is among the top 5 working actors of the 90's and 00's -- so I expect the same commitment behind the camera.

Release Date/Status?: Opening at Sundance, Overture have yet to attach a date, but I imagine they'll play it by ear, listen to the critics and make their marketing decisions from then on.

Review: The Kid With a Bike

Review: The Kid With a Bike

"Despite the one-dimensionality of its anti-patriarchal theme (appeasing the knee-jerk expectations of European film fest audiences), the Dardennes avoid cheapening the story with ideological smugness, achieving an emotional resonance without easy sentimentality."

Review: Wrong

"Encoded in the outlandish humor that pervades the film are bits of commentary on everyday life. The most overt is Dupieux's urging to appreciate the relationships around you, which is manifested in the dog kidnapping, but also in a subplot in which a woman from the pizzeria moves between men without even realizing they have changed. Another cultural critique is found in the rainy office, an instantly recognizable visual metaphor for how dreary a 9 to 5 job can be."
