Sundance Journal 2009 Day 4: David MacKenzie’s Spread

Date:

An early morning screening for a seedy, living large in Los Angeles comedy where the protag develops a consciousness after finding the one girl who doesn’t fall for his very successful game plan. It’s edgy because it has got some full frontal territory for Anne Heche and different buttocks angles from an Ashton Kutcher who essentially plays the same role but for a demogrpahic which does not include the tweens.

Sundance Spread Ashton Kutcher

Besides this great pad or spread from which to film from, David MacKenzie‘s film is minimalist in scope — and the camera movement is fluid when need be. I found that the screenplay – a first from Jason Dean Hall (see pic) could have been more vicious and ultimately, it doesn’t have enough stamina for the home stretch – a resting place that attempts to be a bit bittersweet. I’ll give points to whoever thought about the end credits: which is basically the symbolic use of a kick-sized frog with a healthy appetite.
