Cinedigm to Runaway with SXSW Grand Jury Winner; Short Term 12 Set to Become Summer Gem

Date:

They made inroads with award-winning docu The Invisible War, are in the midst of releasing the trio of TIFF titles they bought Come Out and Play, Arthur Newman, The English Teacher and a have got a recent Sundance pick-up in Narco Cultura, but today, with the theatrical release grab for the SXSW Audience and Grand Jury Winner, Cinedigm confirms their intentions on becoming a player in indie releases. Destin Daniel Cretton’s Short Term 12 will be released in theaters this summer.

Gist: Think One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest with a dash of Smashed, this is told through the eyes of Grace, a twenty-something supervisor at a foster-care facility for at-risk teenagers. Passionate and tough, Grace is a formidable caretaker of the kids in her charge – and in love with her long-term boyfriend and co-worker, Mason. But Grace’s own difficult past – and the surprising future that suddenly presents itself – throw her into unforeseen confusion, made all the sharper with the arrival of a new intake at the facility: a gifted but troubled teenage girl with whom Grace has a charged connection.

Worth Noting: The short on which this is based on is worth the watch. See trailer below.

Do We Care? The clear favorite among my fellow jury members who voted Short Term 12 as the Grand Jury winner, for a sophomore feature, Cretton shows tremendous poise crfting a gem of a film that excels in just about every technical category.
