Viewing Tip: Alex Gibney’s My Trip to al-Qaeda

Among the forty-plus titles I'll be seeing in Toronto we have Alex Gibney's Client 9: The Rise And Fall Of Eliot Spitzer, but if I wanted to see his latest work, I'd check out what the hardest working documentary filmmaker is about to release tonite.

Alternative TIFF 2010 Picks: #10. Sion Sono’s Cold Fish

From the maker behind 2001's Suicide Club and the four-hour opus 2009's Love Exposure comes this messed up piece that is based on a true story. Showing in Venice and TIFF, the public screenings for this will be considered film events at the festival itself with many Sono fans packing the seats.

Alternative TIFF 2010 Picks: #9. Fernando Trueba and Javier Mariscal’s Chico & Rita

Receiving it's world premiere in the mountain setting of Telluride before the cityscape of Toronto, I'm hearing that illustrated Spanish helmer Fernando Trueba's co-directed pic is an animated version that will draw comparisons to Buena Vista Social Club.

Alternative TIFF 2010 Picks: #8. Frederick Wiseman’s Boxing Gym

Before hitting Cannes' Director's Fortnight in May, this made waves in Amsterdam's IDFA Doc Festival last November proving that the beloved, veteran filmmaker is still a heavyweight among doc directors. Receiving a theatrical release in October, this is among the highlights in Thom Powers' Real to Reel 2010 program.

Alternative TIFF 2010 Picks: #7. Isabelle Stever’s Blessed Events

TIFF have the world premiere here from a filmmaker who might not be as well known as some of the other German filmmaker counterparts (e.g. Fatih Akin, Tom Tykwer, Hans Weingartner) that were part of the Germany 09: 13 Short Films About the State of the Nation. I'm liking some of the ideas that are being explored in Stever's sophomore film, the film's trailer certainly has a quirky vibe to it.
