2012 Sundance Predictions: So Yong Kim’s For Ellen

Fans of So Yong Kim have been waiting for what seems to be an eternity for her third oeuvre to make a festival appearance. After hoping for a showing at Sundance and the major film fests this year, I'd be willing to bet that the filmmaker and producer will travel the festival circuit with not one but two films in 2012 - For Ellen might just be joined to the hip to Bradley Rust Gray's Jack and Diane. I expect this to be included in the Dramatic Competition Section or a Premieres section showing and find a subsequent festival release in Berlin.

2012 Sundance Predictions: Duplass Bros.’ The Do-Deca-Pentathlon

Will this be the year that the Duplass Bros.'s comedy The Do-Deca-Pentathlon finally gets released? Either this was tucked away because the quality level wasn't there or... most likely the Bros. have been so busy when studios came calling (Cyrus, Jeff Who Lives At Home) that this pushed back. With less items on tap -- this long time completed comedy should see the light of day perhaps in the NEXT category.

2012 Sundance Predictions: Rola Nashef’s Detroit Unleaded

Based on the 2006 short film, helmer Rola Nashef has managed to find backers of all sorts for her feature version dating from the support 2007 Sundance Institute Screenwriters Lab in Jordan to a great 2011 with the IFP Feature Narrative Lab Fellow, Film Society of Lincoln Center, Emerging Visions Fellow and being selected as one of Filmmaker Magazine "25 New Faces of Independent Film".) Politics aside, this immigrant experience drama is the type of film that Sundance will always program.

2012 Sundance Predictions: Craig Zobel’s Compliance

Craig Zobel might have been bombarded with projects/offers since his 2007 breakout Sundance hit Great World of Sound, but somehow this smaller, quickly financed and filmed project (which also sees thesp Pat Healy) appears to be the solid sophomore picture fans of the filmmaker might be waiting for. Locked earlier in the year, Compliance was among the coin recipients of the Cinereach Project at Sundance Institute in 2011 - we expect a U.S Dramatic Comp slot.

It'll be back to back production years for the Xan Cassavetes. The eldest daughter of the indie maverick is putting the final touches on her vampire love triangle Kiss of the Damned, a film that should preem at a major film festival in 2012 and now she has lined up her next project entitled 1000 Days of Rage and Hope which will begin lensing in NYC next April.
