Well-versed in a cinema working in different strands of comedy, from Head of State, I Think I Love My Wife and into Top Five, Chris Rock has used the funnybone to explore ambition, relationships, celebrity and the contradictions we find in America. With Misty Green, he offers a satirical look into the making it in Hollywood as an actor while in the same moment attempting to regain control of this thing called life. Premiering at TIFF, I wanted to know a bit more about the construction of tackling the mental health aspect when Rosalind Eleazar’s character must take responsibility for her brother, Jordan (played by Daniel Kaluuya), whose bipolar disorder complicates an already precarious existence.
