Magic Mountains

Poland’s Urszula Antoniak embarks on a Dutch production for her fifth film, Magic Mountains, starring Flemish actor Thomas Ryckewaert, Polish actor Marcin Dorocinski (Anthropoid, 2016) and Dutch actor Hannah Hoekstra (a breakout in Sacha Polack’s 2012 Hemel who also had a minor role in Elizabeth Banks’ reboot of Charlie’s Angels). Antoniak reunites with her Beyond Words (read review) P Lennert Hillege, with Floor Onrust serving as producer. Antoniak’s breakout was her 2009 debut Nothing Personal, which competed in Locarno and won a handful of awards (including Best First Film, the FIPRESCI and Ecumenical Jury Prize, among others). She went to Directors’ Fortnight in 2011 with Code Blue and 2017’s Beyond Words competed in San Sebastian.

Gist: Renowned author Lex invites his ex-partner, muse and climbing buddy Hannah on one last hiking trip in the Slovak High Tatras. Hiring Voytek to take them through areas untouched by tourists, the guide becomes wary of Lex, unwilling to let him be left alone with Hannah.

Release Date/Prediction: Antoniak lensed in June of 2019, with a scheduled release in the Netherlands in February 2020. Berlin (where Antoniak has yet to play) could also be possible festival release.
