2018 Cannes: Gonzalez, Dvortsevoy & Ceylan In Comp; Plus von Trier, Bahrani & Gilliam Added!

The two omissions that were certainly going to be added in this pending announcement number two have been confirmed. But while Nuri Bilge Ceylan‘s The Wild Pear Tree is one among three add ons to the comp, Lars von Trier‘s The House That Jack Built becomes an out of competition offering alongside Midnight Screenings of Kevin Macdonald‘s Whitney and Ramin Bahrani‘s Fahrenheit 451. Returning to their format from a couple of years back, the closing film slot goes to Terry Gilliam‘s The Man Who Killed Don Quixote.

The more alluring portion of the announcement is seeing two feature filmmakers who previously saw their debuts get featured in Cannes arrive with their sophomore films in the Comp. Un couteau dans le cœur (Knife + Heart) is Yann Gonzalez‘s serial killer film starring Vanessa Paradis (which we ranked #59 on our most anticipated list). His debut film You and the Night premiered in the 2013 Critics’ Week at the Cannes Film Festival as a Special Screening. Sergey Dvortsevoy who gave us the excellent Tulpan (winner of the Prize Un Certain Regard in 2008) brings us the most under the radar film of the festival with Ayka. Ceylan becomes the sole filmmaker to return to the Comp who has already won the Palme.

The Un Certain Regard program is also complete with Argentinean Alejandro Fadel‘s Muere, Monstruo, Muere (Meurs, monstre, meurs) – his last feature The Wild Ones was shown at the Critic’s Week, Portugese helmer João Salaviza (his debut Montanha was shown at the Venice Film Fest in 2015) and the Brazilian Renée Nader Messora‘s Chuva E Cantoria Na Aldeia Dos Mortos (The Dead and the Others) and the section will open with Sergey Loznitsa‘s Donbass opening up the section. IONCINEMA.com will be on hand to cover the festival.
