Winner of the Palme d’Or for 1999’s Rosetta (which also took Best Actress for the recently departed Émilie Dequenne) and 2005’s The Child, Luc and Jean-Pierre Dardenne have been Cannes mainstays landing accolades for almost their entire filmography. Jeunes mères focuses on five young mothers fighting to ensure a better world for their children. Production took place in May of last year. This was the second to last competition film today.
As regular guests at Cannes, there is a familiarness to the Dardennes output and so far from our jury – eleven folks are either in the yes or no camp — with perfect scores signalling that anything is possible for awards tomorrow. So far we have an average score of 3.4.
