Foursome show no resistance to ‘Defiance’

Date:

Unlike Oscar Schindler, Tuvia Bielski and his brothers saved hundreds from the Holocaust the old fashion way: they fought with gun powder to rescue some of their own. The picture above shows some of those who camped out and devised a plan to counter attack the Nazi. The aptly titled Defiance is going into production very soon.

After an announcement at Cannes film festival that saw Daniel Craig come aboard the Edward Zwick directed project, today the trades announce the casting news of Liev Schreiber, Jamie Bell, Alexa Davalos and Tomas Arana in what has become a Paramount Vantage project.

No stranger to mounting war-pics and epics (see Blood Diamond, The Last Samurai, Glory)  Zwick directs from his own script based on Nechama Tec's book “Defiance: The Bielski Partisans”, the film revolves around Jewish brothers (Craig, Schreiber and Bell) living in Nazi-occupied Poland who escape into the Belarussian forest where they join Russian resistance fighters in battling the Nazis. Throughout the war, they build a village inside the forest and save the lives of more than 1,200 Jews. Davalos will play Lilka, a Polish refugee and the love interest of Craig's character. Arana will play Ben Zion, a skilled leader in the resistance.
