Golden G’s: winners & losers

Sticking to the movie portion of the night, IONCINEMA.com will throw kudos where warranted and bash those who aren’t as deserving….

1. BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN A MOTION PICTURE

a. GEORGE CLOONEY SYRIANAWinner!
b. MATT DILLON CRASH
c. WILL FERRELL THE PRODUCERS
d. PAUL GIAMATTI CINDERELLA MAN
e. BOB HOSKINS MRS. HENDERSON PRESENTS

Marcello: George Clooney certainly deserves a recognition considering his achievements for both Syriana and Good Night and Good Luck, but in my opinion Matt Dillon in “Crash” delivered by far the best performance of the year as supporting actor.

Eric: Didn’t see Hoskins, but Clooney, his beard and his 30 plus pounds are worth their weight in Gold.

2. BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN A MOTION PICTURE

a. SCARLETT JOHANSSON MATCH POINT
b. SHIRLEY MacLAINE IN HER SHOES
c. FRANCES McDORMAND NORTH COUNTRY
d. RACHEL WEISZ THE CONSTANT GARDENERWinner!
e. MICHELLE WILLIAMS BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN

Marcello: 2006 looks like a great year for Rachel Weisz (star of the upcoming and long awaited “The Fountain”) but personally I would have picked either Michelle Williams for her heartbreaking portrait of the submissive wife of Heath Ledger (her partner also in life) in Brokeback Mountain or Scarlett Johansson for her femme fatale-turned-into-victim role in “Match Point”

Eric: Scarlett deserves a win for her red dress, but Weisz didn’t deliver turmoil like Michelle William’s delivered pissed off housewife in Brokeback.

3. BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE – MUSICAL OR COMEDY

a. JUDI DENCH MRS. HENDERSON PRESENTS
b. KEIRA KNIGHTLEY PRIDE & PREJUDICE
c. LAURA LINNEY THE SQUID AND THE WHALE
d. SARAH JESSICA PARKER THE FAMILY STONE
e. REESE WITHERSPOON WALK THE LINE – Winner!

Marcello: …the bimbo of Legally Blond and Election has finally grown up…

Eric: Thought Reese was great in WtL, Keira delivered perhaps her career best in the surprisingly good remake of Pride & Prejudice.

4. BEST SCREENPLAY – MOTION PICTURE

a. WOODY ALLEN MATCH POINT
b. GEORGE CLOONEY & GRANT HESLOV GOOD NIGHT, AND GOOD LUCK
c. PAUL HAGGIS & BOBBY MORESCO CRASH
d. TONY KUSHNER & ERIC ROTH MUNICH
e. LARRY McMURTRY & DIANA OSSANA BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN – Winner!

Marcello: a wonderful script (i’d say even better than the final film) that dares to turn the most macho of the film genres upside down and delivers the first mainstream Hollywood gay love story. Yet, my heart goes also to Paul Haggis’ dialogues in Crash, and to the incredible structure of Munich.

Eric: Especially strong category. No clear favorites for me. I miss typewriters too.

5. BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM

a. JOYEUX NOEL (MERRY CHRISTMAS) (FRANCE)
Nord Quest Prods/Senator Film Prods./The Bureau Artemis Prods/Media Pro Pictures/TFI Films/Les Productions de la Gueville; Sony Pictures Classics

b. KUNG FU HUSTLE (CHINA)
Columbia Pictures Film Prod. Asia/Huayi Brothers/Taihe Film Investment Co. Ltd/Star Overseas; Sony Pictures Classics

Augustus Film/Lama Films/Razor Films/Lumen Films/Arte France Cinema/Hazazah Film; Warner Independent Pictures – Winner!

d. THE PROMISE (MASTER OF THE CRIMSON ARMOR) (CHINA)
Moonstone Entertainment

e. TSOTSI (SOUTH AFRICA)
UK Film & Production Company PLC/Industrial Developement Corporation of South Africa/National Film & Video Foundation of South Africa; Miramax Films

Marcello: hands down of one of the best films of 2005!!!

Eric: Saw the film – great choice, but I imagine Tsosti and The Promise aren’t too shabby either.

6. BEST ORIGINAL SCORE – MOTION PICTURE

a. ALEXANDRE DESPLAT SYRIANA
b. HARRY GREGSON-WILLIAMS
THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: THE LION, THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE

c. JAMES NEWTON HOWARD KING KONG
d. GUSTAVO SANTAOLALLA BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN
e. JOHN WILLIAMS MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA – Winner!

Marcello: I personally loved the score of Newton Howard for King Kong

Eric: Brokeback was my auditory pick.

7. BEST ORIGINAL SONG – MOTION PICTURE

a. “A LOVE THAT WILL NEVER GROW OLD” — BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN
Music by: Gustavo Santaolalla
Lyrics by: Bernie Taupin – Winner!

b. “CHRISTMAS IN LOVE” — CHRISTMAS IN LOVE
Music by: Tony Renis
Lyrics by: Marva Jan Marrow

c. “THERE’S NOTHING LIKE A SHOW ON BROADWAY” — THE PRODUCERS
Music & Lyrics by: Mel Brooks

d. “TRAVELIN’ THRU” — TRANSAMERICA
Music & Lyrics by: Dolly Parton

e. “WUNDERKIND” — THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: THE LION, THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE
Music & Lyrics by: Alanis Morissette

Marcello: …am glad for Taupin, but Dolly Parton would have been a “gayer” choice

Eric: I’m still psyched on the 8 Mile and Magnolia songs. Brokeback deserves this one.

8. BEST DIRECTOR – MOTION PICTURE

a. WOODY ALLEN MATCH POINT
b. GEORGE CLOONEY GOOD NIGHT, AND GOOD LUCK
c. PETER JACKSON KING KONG
d. ANG LEE BROKEBACK MOUNTAINWinner!
e. FERNANDO MEIRELLES THE CONSTANT GARDENER
f. STEVEN SPIELBERG MUNICH

Marcello: …am very happy for Ang Lee (tho he deserved it for Ice Storm), but my choice would have gone without any doubt to Spielberg for the incredible, stunning and daring directing of Munich!

Eric: Surprise surprise….not! Great speech by Ang. Take that Hulk-haters! Personally, I was hoping for George – but he already had an award.

9. BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE -MUSICAL OR COMEDY

a. PIERCE BROSNAN THE MATADOR
b. JEFF DANIELS THE SQUID AND THE WHALE
c. JOHNNY DEPP CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY
d. NATHAN LANE THE PRODUCERS
e. CILLIAN MURPHY BREAKFAST ON PLUTO
f. JOAQUIN PHOENIX WALK THE LINEWinner!

Marcello: My personal choice would have gone to Cillian Murphy – who managed in the difficult task of being feminine without being effeminate in the role of the naive transvestite kitty

Eric: No clear favs for me – I’d have leaned towards Murphy too, but Capote will take best actor at the Oscars so enjoy it while it lasts Joaquin!

10. BEST MOTION PICTURE – MUSICAL OR COMEDY

a. MRS. HENDERSON PRESENTS
Heyman Hoskins Prods.; The Weinstein Company

b. PRIDE & PREJUDICE
Working Title Prods.; Focus Features/StudioCanal

c. THE PRODUCERS
Brooksfilms; Universal Pictures/Columbia Pictures

d. THE SQUID AND THE WHALE
American Empirical/Peter Newman-InterAL; Samuel Goldwyn Films/Sony Pictures Releasing International

e. WALK THE LINE
Fox 2000 Pictures/TreeLine Productions/Catfish Productions; Twentieth Century Fox – Winner!

Marcello: I didn’t have a favorite here… My fav comedy of the year was actually Me and You and Everyone We Know

Eric: Missed a couple from this category. No comment.

11. BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE – DRAMA

a. MARIA BELLO A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE
b. FELICITY HUFFMAN TRANSAMERICA – Winner!
c. GWYNETH PALTROW PROOF
d. CHARLIZE THERON NORTH COUNTRY
e. ZIYI ZHANG MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA

Marcello: Congrats to Felicity! She is truly amazing, and the trick of playing a transexual works (ask hillary swank)

Eric: Bello was solid, but in order to win best actress you’ve got to play the lead figure. Early dark horse pick – is the only one who deserves the first place votes.

12. BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE – DRAMA

a. RUSSELL CROWE CINDERELLA MAN
b. PHILIP SEYMOUR HOFFMAN CAPOTEWinner!
c. TERRENCE HOWARD HUSTLE & FLOW
d. HEATH LEDGER BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN
e. DAVID STRATHAIRN GOOD NIGHT, AND GOOD LUCK

Marcello: Well, it was a tough call between the gay writer and the gay cowboy. Kudos to both.

Eric: Wow…what a great year for lead actors. Hoffman deserves it for Capote and for an entire career of great performances.

13. BEST MOTION PICTURE – DRAMA

a. BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN
Focus Features/River Road Entertainment – Winner!
b. THE CONSTANT GARDENER
Potboiler Prods./Scion Films; Focus Features
c. GOOD NIGHT, AND GOOD LUCK
Section Eight/2929 Entertainment/Participant Productions; Warner Independent Pictures
d. A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE
Benderspink Productions; New Line Cinema
e. MATCH POINT
Jada Productions; DreamWorks Pictures

Marcello: Kudos to a truly beautiful film! But it’s absurd that films like Munich, Crash and Syriana didn’t make it in the top 5…

Eric: Not my favorite of the year, nor favorite of the group. Look for this one to saddle up and do the same during Oscar night. Who ever thought I’d actually like a cowboy movie in 2005?
